Irish Girl Raped, Lawyer Says Her Underwear Was Sign of Consent

There is an eruption of outrage in Ireland this week in a rape trial that has gone viral. A 27-year-old man was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl. According to The Irish Times, the man's defense attorney stated, "You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front."

The 27-year-old man has been acquitted.

Ruth Coppinger, a member of the Irish Parliament, has been a strong voice for the protests. In the video below, she speaks of victim-blaming and calls for a change. She makes a statement by showing a pair of underwear in court and speaks of the bravery of rape victims who choose to speak up.

Protests have begun and a campaign online has begun circulating, using the hashtag #ThisIsNotConsent.
