Surviving Soundgarden Members to Put "Best Fist Forward" at Cornell Benefit

The surviving members of Soundgarden are bracing themselves for what will be an "anxious" and emotional night for the "I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell" benefit concert this coming January.

The evening — which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel — was put together by Soundgarden's management and Cornell's widow, Vicky Cornell. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation and the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil says that all the artists appearing at the event are ones who had a connection to Chris and were approved by Soundgarden.

"They were looking for people the band had a history with — Chris had a history with and people who were supportive of us over our careers and fans of ours who could so some of this material justice," Thayil told Forbes

As such Thayil and his Soundgarden bandmates Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron will be sharing a stage with Metallica, Foo Fighters, as well as members of Audioslave and Pearl Jam

Being that Soundgarden does not plan to press on without its iconic front man, the January 16, 2019, show might be one of the last times the surviving three will perform music from its back catalog in concert.

"I think Matt, Ben and I will collectively decide which songs we'll throw our best fist forward," Thayil said.

He added that Zen Guerrilla front man Marcus Durant, who fronted the MC50 project, will perform vocals with Soundgarden for at least part of its set.
