The Lumineers' Jeremiah Fraites Covers Nirvana On The Piano: Watch

The Lumineers On AT&T LIVE At The iHeartRadio Theater Los Angeles

As artists self-quarantine to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, they're finding creative ways to use their downtime and connect with fans from writing collective poems to sharing "ridiculous" stories to livestreaming home concerts. For Jeremiah Fraites, it's covering influential songs on his "firewood" piano. The Lumineers co-founder took to Instagram to tell the story of the beloved piano used to record the band's latest album, III, and share a cover of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box."

"This is the piano that we used to record all of the piano tunes on our most recent album. It’s known as 'firewood' within certain communities," he captioned the video. "A few years ago I asked my piano tuner in Denver what he thought of this piano and he paused for a moment and then looked me straight in the eye and said 'Pardner, firewood!' I’ve taken this as a name of endearment, even a badge of honor."

"It’s not the best sounding piano but it’s by and large one of the most unique piano sounds I’ve ever heard in my life and is my favorite," he continued. "During this downtime I may try and record a few covers of music that greatly influenced me when I was younger. This is no doubt one of those tunes."
