Ben Gibbard was supposed to be on a solo tour this Spring and planned to drop a new single before hitting the road, but even though he's stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Death Cab For Cutie singer is still releasing that song.
Titled "Proxima B," the new track sounds like a DCFC deep cut, and it shows off the singer-songwriter's sci-fi side. โThis one I wrote a while ago and I was going to have it out as a single for my solo tour this spring,โ Gibbard explained in a statement. โItโs about a planet that was discovered deep, deep in the cosmos, called Proxima B. The three things you need to know about Proxima B to understand the song are: One, thereโs a planet called Proxima B that they think has water on it. Itโs somewhat Earth-like. Secondly, it orbits the star called Centauri. And three, thereโs been a lot of talk of โOoh, maybe we can get there at some point.โ So I wrote this song in response to that.โ
The single is out now digitally, as well as on limited edition 7-inch vinyl and cassette via DCFC's online store, with a cover of Minor Threat's "Filler" as the B-side.

Gibbard also wrote a new song while in lockdown aptly titled "Life In Quarantine," which you can listen to here.
