What started as a welfare check on a young woman turned into a tragic discovery Sunday night (April 4) after police in Raleigh found the body of 20-year-old Christina Maria Matos at her apartment near North Carolina State University. According to WRAL, authorities are investigating her death as a homicide.
Matos turned 20 on Friday and her family grew concerned after not hearing from her between Friday and Sunday. According to the news outlet, Matos' father called police when he couldn't get in touch with his daughter, a student at Wake Technical Community College. Officers arrived at the second-floor Signature 1505 apartment, where she lived with two roommates, around 7 p.m. Sunday, but found Matos deceased.
Police are investigating Matos' death as a homicide, but they have not released any additional information regarding the case. The investigation remains ongoing, with police questioning nearby residents and others living in the Hillsborough Street apartment complex. According to WRAL, residents on the second floor of the complex told police they didn't hear anything that would have alerted them to a problem at Matos' apartment.
